My parents brought me a variety of spices from Turkey recently and sumac was included. I was pleasantly surprised on how good the flavor is! Its unique (a great gift for a foodie friend) and would be tasty on pretty much anything!

The marinade is a couple quick ingredients thrown together in a bowl. The sumac spice will give the chicken a pretty pink color when fully cooked! It goes perfectly in wraps, sandwiches, salads and is delicious served warm or cold!

What is Sumac spice?
Sumac is a red spice made from dried sumac berries. The flavor of sumac can be compared to fresh lemon juice; tart and sharp, a tiny bit of sweetness. Sumac is a nice replacement for lemon zest, lemon pepper and lemon juice.
I love to make this chicken pasta salad for a simple lunch! In a bowl, add the cooked sumac yogurt marinated chicken, cooked pasta noodles, diced cucumbers, onions, chickpeas, spinach and season with salt and pepper. Simple!

Sumac Yogurt Chicken
serves 3-4
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
- 1 tsp ground sumac
- Salt and pepper
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced into 1/2” pieces (chicken thighs work too!)
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
Directions
- In a medium bowl, mix together the yogurt, 1/2 tsp salt and pepper, and the sumac spice. Add the chicken and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Drizzle in the oil to a large skillet and bring to medium heat. Add the diced marinated chicken (do in batches if needed). Cook for 7 minutes, flipping the pieces halfway, until the chicken pieces are cooked through (165 degree F internal temp). Enjoy warm or cold!
Note: The cooked chicken will have a pink color from the sumac spice
